Meet Nurse Practitioner Rachel: ‘Why I Love my Job’

If you’re a Wello member, you’ll be cared for by our nurse practitioners – who are just a video or phone call away. Meet Rachel Slomp, Wello Nurse Practitioner, this avid traveler and mother of two, has much experience caring for children and new mothers. We sat down with Rachel to ask her about her career path and what she likes most about being on the Wello team.

1) What inspired you to become a nurse practitioner?

I enjoyed working as a registered nurse with families in hospitals, but was always curious about the “why.”  I wanted to figure out why we were treating patients in certain ways and what was causing their illnesses. I also wanted to switch to primary care, so I could help people with their day-to-day health concerns and goals.

2) What brought you to Wello?

I had a few nurse practitioner jobs after I finished my training. Then I heard about Wello and was drawn to the chance to work in primary care and virtual healthcare. It’s exciting to be part of such an innovative area of healthcare, that helps more people access the health services they need.

3) What do you like best about working with Wello?

I love the team! My fellow nurse practitioners and the medical team have been very welcoming and supportive.  It’s great to work with people who collaborate so well to improve client care.  Everyone here is excited about improving access and care for their patients.

4) What is the biggest challenge about your work?

Sometimes it’s hard to not look people in the eyes during phone visits. You can tell a lot from body language and eye contact, which is still possible through our Wello video visits. I’ve learned to get more creative in the questions I ask people and how to get the best sense of how they’re feeling.

5) If you were to give clients one piece of health advice, what would it be?

Get back to the basics! Exercise and eat right.  Don’t compare yourself or your health plans to anyone else and avoid getting caught up in the latest trends and quick fixes.

6) Is there a health area you specialize in?

I have spent most of my time, both as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner, in pediatrics. I love working with families. Having a young family myself, I know there are so many things to worry about. It’s great to help families care for their children!

7) Describe a typical day on the job.

I start by reviewing my messages and the lab and diagnostic tests that have come back. Then I see what the day brings!  I often don’t know how many calls we will get at the beginning of the day, which keeps me on my toes!
8) Anything else you’d like to share?

I am always happy to discuss your health concerns with you. There is no such thing as a dumb question, and if I don’t know the answer I will look into it for you.
