We’ve had a lot of people asking about our nurse practitioners – the caring and compassionate medical care providers who make all the wheels turn here at Wello. Whether they’re offering advice on a video chat or helping you get the most out of your membership with one of our many other services, one thing is clear: our nurse practitioners are extremely skilled and exceptional at the job they do.

Recently we asked one of them, Julie Bakko, to answer a few questions about herself and what her day-to-day life is like. Read on for a glimpse behind the scenes, and find out what it takes to be a Wello team member!

1) Tell us about yourself – what inspired you to become a nurse practitioner?

I was born in Medicine Hat, and moved to Okotoks in February 2017 from Coaldale. I have four kids – three daughters and a son – and I was also a surrogate for an Australian couple in March 2016. I became a Registered Nurse in 2002 and decided to become a Nurse Practitioner (or NP) because of the years I spent in Taber as an Registered Nurse. I had a wide open scope of practice…I decided that I wanted to further my career and knowledge. I’ve always loved being a nurse…this would allow me to be a more prominent contributor to the well-being of my clients.

2) What brought you to Wello? How long have you been working with Wello?

I graduated with my Master’s in April 2016 and started my job search…I came upon the posting for a Nurse Practitioner at Wello.  I started reading of the values that the company encompassed on the website and was immediately drawn to the position. I was one of the original team members of Wello, starting in July of 2016.

3) What would you say is your biggest highlight as a result of working with Wello? What do you like best?

The biggest highlights are the experiences I’ve had, and the wonderful people, clients, and co-workers. I love what I do for a living! I get to facilitate improvements in health and well-being, solve medical mysteries, cure or manage conditions…it’s absolutely awesome.

4) What is the biggest challenge about the work you do?

The kinks that come along with working with technology….but all in all, for a new program, we have been relatively issue-free.

5) If you were to give clients one piece of health advice, what would it be?

Start a physical activity regimen and stick to it. Remain active throughout life…any activity is better than none.

6) Is there a health area you specialize in?

I worked on an acute cardiac floor so I have a good knowledge base of cardiac nursing…I also have a great passion for women’s health.

7) Describe a typical day in the life of a Wello Nurse Practitioner.

A typical day involves a visit over the phone or video where I can diagnose a treatment ordered without ever laying hands on the client! I also answer emails and secure messages.
